Let us talk about two types of conscience, they are LAX conscience and SCRUPULOUS conscience.
These are two extremes.
While someone with scrupulous conscience SEES SIN where there is NO SIN, the person with lax conscience SEES NO SIN where there is SIN.
While someone with a scrupulous conscience can cast himself or herself to hell for doing something that even the devil will be surprised that it was seen as sinful, the person with a lax conscience can cast himself or herself to heaven for doing something that even God will be surprised that it was not seen as sinful.
Truth be told, there are so many people out there with either lax or scrupulous consciences. They need to be helped. This is the basic reason for this post.
There is someone out there that sees no sin in maltreating the wife. To him, it is normal; in fact, he will claim that he is helping her to be better. The same applies to a woman that sees no sin in maltreating the maid. The maid is treated like trash and the children of the woman are treated like queens and kings. These sets of people consider themselves as candidates of heaven. Yet, these same persons will be restless for not paying tithes. They will go to confession for failing to pay tithe because to them they are ‘robbing God.’
There is someone out there who sees no sin in cheating during exams or cheating customers who come to buy goods, for him/her it is normal, it is called smartness. Yet, a girl wearing trousers or even make-up is considered by this same person as a candidate of hell.
There are extreme cases where a girl with a scrupulous conscience can stay without eating for days as a way of showing repentance for simply thinking about men or having sexual urge. There are cases where a man after having wet dreams went to the mountain and cried all day for God’s forgiveness. Some married couples find it difficult to forgive themselves for having sex on a Sunday.
On the other hand, there are extreme cases of lax conscience where someone sees abortion as normal. There are cases in which married men feel it is not sinful to sleep with another woman. I have seen cases in which telling lies is not considered sinful; to them, it is an act of being smart.
Conscience plays a central role in a person’s moral choice. Sometimes, what we constantly listen to, people we constantly associate with, things we constantly watch build the type of conscience we turn out to have.
An ‘over-religious’ person may see sin where there is NO sin. An ‘over-rational’ person may see NO sin where there is sin. None of these is better. None of these is balanced. The balanced conscience is what is called an Informed conscience.
You owe it as a gift to yourself to have an INFORMED conscience. It is this conscience that puts a balance.
You will easily fall into having scrupulous conscience if you think everything about life is having faith only and no need for reasoning. On the other hand, you will easily fall into having lax conscience if you think everything is about reasoning only without faith.
One with scrupulous conscience easily becomes a fanatic. One with a lax conscience has the potency of being a terrorist. A balanced individual has 100% faith and 100% sound reasoning in every decision.
