Sacramental when used with faith, can be very powerful in our homes. They can inspire in us Catholics a life of holiness and dedication to the LORD and can also protect us from forces of evil that may strive to attack us in our homes.

Three powerful sacramental that I recommend for your home are

  1. The Crucifix:

Many Catholics have this practice of having a crucifix in their homes but do you know that apart from reminding us of the love of Jesus Christ who died on the cross of Calvary for our salvation, it can also protect us from the snares of the evil one. I encourage you to have a crucifix in every room in your home.

Here are two prayers of blessing a crucifix in the Roman Ritual which sum up all the reasons we need them in our homes. The first prayer says

Holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, be pleased to bless + this cross, that it may be a saving help to mankind. Let it be the support of faith, an encouragement to good works, the redemption of souls; and let it be consolation, protection, and a shield against the cruel darts of the enemy; through Christ our Lord.

The second prayer says

Lord Jesus Christ, bless + this cross by which you snatched the world from Satan’s grasp, and on which you overcame by your suffering the tempter to sin, who rejoiced in the first man’s fall in eating of the forbidden tree. Here it is sprinkled with holy water. May this cross be hallowed in the name of the Father, + and of the Son, + and of the Holy + Spirit; and may all who kneel and pray before this cross in honor of our Lord find health in body and soul; through Christ our Lord.

  1. Holy Water:

St. Teresa of Avila extolled the importance of holy water and she said “From long experience I have learned that there is nothing like holy water to put devils to flight and prevent them from coming back again. They also flee from the Cross, but return; so holy water must have great virtue. For my own part, whenever I take it, my soul feels a particular and most notable consolation.” -St. Teresa of Avila

As Catholics we can have holy water fonts at the entrance of our homes like we have in Churches and Chapels, in this way, we can bless ourselves with holy water when we are leaving the home and when we come back. This can be a powerful way to keep ourselves protected.

  1. Blessed Salt:

This is one sacramental that is often neglected but a very powerful weapon for healing and against demonic forces as is evident in the following portion of the blessing said by the priest found in the Roman Ritual. It says

“Almighty and everlasting God, we humbly implore you, in your immeasurable kindness and love, to bless (+) this salt which you created and gave to the use of mankind, so that it may become a source of health for the minds and bodies of all who make use of it. May it rid whatever it touches or sprinkles of all uncleanness, and protect it from every assault of evil spirits. Through Christ our Lord.”

So as you can see from this prayer used in the blessing of salt, blessed salt can be a source of health for the minds and bodies of all who make use of it and it can also rid whatever it touches of all uncleanness and protects from every assault of the evil spirits.

We don’t always have blessed salt kept in parishes like we have holy water so you can take some salt to your Priest and ask for a blessing.
