The Miracles Of Lourdes: The St. Bernadette Story

The Miracles Of Lourdes: The St. Bernadette Story

In February 1858 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a 14-year-old girl called Bernadette Soubirous (now St. Bernadette) in the remote Grotto of Massabielle.

On 11 February 1858, Bernadette Soubirous was out gathering firewood with her sister and another friend at the grotto of Massabielle outside Lourdes, Bernadette saw the first of 18 visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The other girls saw nothing. The apparition did not identify herself until the 17th vision, and until then Bernadette called her simply ‘Aquero’ (‘she’ in the local dialect).

On the ninth vision, the lady told Bernadette to drink from the spring that flowed under the rock.

Although there was no known spring there, and the ground was hard and dry, Bernadette assumed the lady meant that the spring was underground. She did as she was told and dug into the dirt, and a spring appeared which continues flowing to this day. The water of the spring pocesses miraculous healing properties; in the 145 years since then, about 70 cures have been verified by the Lourdes Bureau as “inexplicable”, but only after extremely rigorous scientific and medical examinations failed to find any other explanations.

There are four Marian Catholic dogmas which we can also refer to as privileges of Mary and these are: Immaculate Conception, Mother of God, Perpetual Virginity of Mary and Assumption of Mary.

Theologians have also identified some other privileges of Mary such as Queenship of Mary, Mediatrix of all graces, Mother of the Church, Full of geace, Cooperation in redemption and that Mary is above all the Saints most excellent in glory. This is but a few of the privileges granted by the Most Holy Trinity to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

We take a look at a few of them:

1. Immaculate Conception.

On December 8, 1854, having spent all of his holy life – his boyhood, his priesthood, as bishop, cardinal and Pope – at the feet of the Mother of God, the most Blessed Virgin Mary, and having deeply considered also, in his exile at Gaeta, the earnest petitions of Catholics all over the world in its behalf, Pope Pius IX defined ex cathedra, in the glorious Basilica of Saint Peter’s before one hundred and seventy bishops and innumerable pilgrims come literally from the ends of the earth, the divine dogma of Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception. The voice of the Sovereign Pontiff broke and tears filled his eyes as he paused before uttering the infallible words:
“We declare, pronounce and define that the doctrine which holds that the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the first instant of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace of the Omnipotent God, in virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of mankind, was preserved immaculate from all stain of original sin, has been revealed by God, and therefore should firmly and constantly be believed by all the faithful….”

What Is The Immaculate Conception Of The Blessed Virgin Mary?

According to this dogmatic definition, it has been revealed by God that Mary was preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception

At the General Audience, the Holy Father Saint Pope John Paul II continued his catechesis on the Immaculate Conception, this time discussing the dogmatic definition of the doctrine by Pope Pius IX.

“We declare, pronounce and define that the doctrine which asserts that the Blessed Virgin Mary, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God, and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, was preserved free from every stain of original sin is a doctrine revealed by God and, for this reason, must be firmly and constantly believed by all the faithful”. the Pope said in his Bull Ineffabilis.
