Catholic Priest Shot Dead, In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, As Unrest Continues


A Congolese Catholic priest has been found dead in the Congo days after another priest was abducted.

Father Etienne Sengiyumvam 28, was found ‘shot in the head’ hours after he had celebrated a wedding with his parishioners, the head of his diocese said.

ReutersThe Democratic Republic of Congo is plagued by unrest.

Last week kidnappers took Father Célestin Ngango, parish priest of Saint Paul of Karambi, and are demanding $500,000 for his release.

Three other priests, Assumptionist Fathers Jean-Pierre Ndulani, Edmond Kisughi and Anselme Wasukundi, were abduced on October 19, 2012, and two more, Jean-Pierre Akilimali and Charles Kipasa, on July 17, 2017. None of them has been heard from since.

Catholic Nun killed in Democratic Republic of Congo

On a sad note, a Catholic nun in the Democratic Republic of Congo was murdered last week by unknown suspects in an apparent robbery, the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions has reported.

Sister Marie Claire Agano, a religious of the Franciscan Congregation of Christ the King, was killed the afternoon of Nov. 29 in her office of the vocational training center at the Mater Dei parish of Bakavu.

The pontifical institute’s “World and Mission” magazine wrote that Sister Marie Claire was victim of “an assault with a gun, probably by bandits who wanted to rob her.”
