Does The Bible Mention The Catholic Church?

The term “Catholic” is derived from the Greek word καθολικός (katholikos) meaning “universal” and was first used to describe the Church in the early 2nd century. The “Catholic Church” first appeared in a letter of St Ignatius written in about the year 110. In the “Catechetical Discourses” of St. Cyril of Jerusalem, “Catholic Church” is used to distinguish it from other groups that also call themselves the church.

Since the East–West Schism of 1054, the church that remained in communion with the See of Rome continued to call itself “Catholic” while the Eastern churches have generally been known as “Orthodox”. Following the Reformation in the 16th century, Catholic came to distinguish the Church from the Protestant sects that separated from the Church.

There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, “Thy will be done,” and those to whom God say, in the end, “Thy will be done.” The Great Divorce, C.S. Lewis.

Now, there is no book or verse of the Bible that explicitly mentions the name “Catholic Church”, but there are lots of biblical references linked to the Catholic Church. Here are some of those biblical quotations and references:

Matthew 16:18

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

1 Timothy 2:5

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Acts 2:37-39

Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Revelation 12:1-17

And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman (Blessed Virgin Mary) clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it. She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, …

John 21:25

Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

Matthew 23:9

“And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven”.

2 Timothy 2:2

And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

1 Timothy 3:15

If I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.

1 Corinthians 11:2

Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you.

Luke 11:27-28

As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Luke 2:1-52

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child….

2 Thessalonians 2:15

So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.

John 10:16

And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

Matthew 25:31-46

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me…

And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.

John 1:14

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Mark 7:13

“Thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

Matthew 28:19

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”.

Acts 17:11

Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

John 17:17

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

Revelation 18:1-24

After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was made bright with his glory. And he called out with a mighty voice, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place for demons, a haunt for every unclean spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast. For all nations have drunk the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.” Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues; for her sins are heaped high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. “…

Matthew 6:7

“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.”

Hail Mary Biblical Quotations

“There were many other signs that Jesus gave in the presence of his disciples, but were not recorded in this book.” Jn 20:21.

“But Jesus did many other things; if all were written down, the world itself would not hold the books recording them.” Jn 21:25.

It must not be in the bible for it to be the truth for Jesus said that when the Holy Spirit comes, He will lead us into all truth.

See 2 Thessalonica 2:15 “Because of that, brothers and sister, stand firm and hold to the traditions that we taught you by word or by letter.”

Here by letter St. Paul talks about the bible for we know that most of the New Testament books were letters written to different Christian communities eg St. Pauls letter to the Roman etc.

As for the traditions taught by word, St. Paul was talking about those practices taught from one generation to another that were not actually written down like some history  or tradition your great grandfather told your grandfather and your grandfather told your father and your father told you. You see what I mean?
