“Worthy Of Believe” – Apparitions Officially Approved By The Holy See

A Roman Catholic approved Marian apparition is one that has been examined by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith either based on certain criteria (which will be listed in our next article) and has been granted approval either through the local Bishop based on the direction of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith or received a direct approval from the Holy See.

Although a local bishop may provide a preliminary assessment (and allow the devotion to proceed forward), formal approval can only be provided after detailed analysis by the Holy See. For instance, although the apparitions at Our Lady of Laus were recognized by the local diocese in 1665, they received approval from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith centuries later, in 2008.

While Catholics are not required to believe any private revelation, even approved ones, apparitions and messages may be approved by the Church for local or universal devotion. This approval is done for the benefit of the faithful, declaring “worthy of belief” those private revelations that can be helpful to Christians striving towards the ultimate goal of Heaven.

The Church is always careful to subject private revelations to a process of study before making any judgment as to the appropriateness of devotion, as it does not want to lead anyone astray from the faith.

Apparitions favored by the Holy See usually:

  • Images enshrined have received a Canonical coronation from a Pope.
  • Become the site of major Roman Catholic Marian churches, or elevated its status as Minor Basilica.

Some apparitions such as in Assiut, Egypt have been approved by the Coptic Church and can be called approved but not Roman Catholic approved.

Here is a list of private revelations over the past two centuries that have been found authentic and are approved by the Holy See for personal belief.

Apparitions Approved by the Roman Catholic Church.

Our Lady of Laus (1664–1718)Edit

The apparitions of Our Lady of Laus between 1664 and 1718 in Saint-Étienne-le-Laus, France, to Benoîte Rencurel, a young shepherdess are the first Marian apparitions approved in the 21st century by the Roman Catholic Church. The apparitions were recognized by the diocese of the Roman Catholic Church on September 18, 1665. They were approved by the Vatican on May 5, 2008. Currently, the site where the apparitions took place receives more than 120,000 pilgrims a year.

Our Lady of Guadalupe (1531)Ed

The 1531 apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe was reported by Saint Juan Diego. He saw an early morning vision of the Virgin Mary in which he was instructed to build an abbey on the Hill of Tepeyac in Mexico. The local prelate did not believe his account and asked for a miraculous sign, which was later provided as an icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe permanently imprinted on the saint’s cloak where he had gathered roses. Over the years, Our Lady of Guadalupe became a symbol of the Catholic faith in Mexico and the Mexican diaspora.

Our Lady of La Salette (1846)Edit

The apparitions of Our Lady of La Salette were reported in La Salette in France in 1846 by two shepherd children, Mélanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud, followed by numerous accounts of miraculous healings. The Roman Catholic Church investigated the claims and found them credible.

Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal (1830)

The vision of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré in 1830 in the convent of Rue du Bac, Paris. She reported that one night in the chapel, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to her and asked that a medallion be made to a design that she dictated. The lady added that, “All who wear this medal will receive great graces. After spending two years examining her claims, her priest eventually took the information to his archbishop. The medal eventually produced came to be referred to as the Miraculous Medal. The front of the medal displays a picture of the virgin as she appeared to Catherine Labouré. The design on the reverse includes the letter M and a cross. Pope John Paul II used a slight variation of the reverse image as his coat of arms, the Marian Cross. This is a plain cross with an M underneath the right-hand bar, to signify the Blessed Virgin standing at the foot of the Cross while Jesus was being crucified.

Our Lady of Lourdes (1858)Ed

In 1858 Saint Bernadette Soubirous was a 14-year-old shepherd girl who lived near the town of Lourdes in France. Bernadette Soubirous was out gathering firewood in the countryside. She reported a vision of a Miraculous Lady who identified Herself as “the Immaculate Conception” in subsequent visions.

The Lady made a sign for me to approach; but I was seized with fear, and I did not dare, thinking that I was faced with an illusion. I rubbed my eyes, but in vain. I looked again, and I could still see the same Lady. Then I put my hand into my pocket, and took my rosary. I wanted to make the sign of the cross, but in vain; I could not raise my hand to my forehead, it kept on dropping”  “The Lady took the rosary that she held in her hands and she made the sign of the cross”.

Kibeho, Rwanda

On November 28, 1981, six young girls and one boy claimed to see the Blessed Virgin Mary and Jesus. The apparitions continued to members of the group until 1989. In 2001 the visions of three of the visionaries were confirmed as authentic. Our Lady’s message was that of repentance and an exhortation to pray the Rosary and Chaplet of Our Lady of Sorrows. Many believe one of the visions foretold the Rwandan genocide that occurred in 1994.

Banneux, Belgium

On January 15, 1933, it was claimed that Our Lady appeared to an 11-year-old girl named Mariette Beco. Our Lady declared to the girl, “I am the Virgin of the Poor.” She then pointed to a spring and said, “This spring is reserved for all the nations, to bring comfort to the sick.” By 1952 the apparitions were recognized by the Holy See as authentic. Many cures and conversions have occurred at these springs.

Fatima, Portugal

On May 13, 1917, three shepherd children, Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco, witnessed a beautiful lady who asked them to come there on the 13th of the month for the next six months. They received many messages and visions from Our Lady and on October 13 a “miracle of the sun” was witnessed by a large crowd of people. The apparitions were approved in 1930 and then recognized by Pope Pius XII in 1940.

Knock, Ireland

On August 21, 1879, 15 people witnessed a silent apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and St. John the Evangelist. There was no verbal message from Our Lady of Knock, who appeared in a state of prayer. The apparition was approved by the local bishop and then recognized by Pope Pius XII in 1954.

‘The Blessed Virgin Mary Is Very Saddened…Has Given Me To Understand That We Are At The End Of Time’ – Sister Lucia Of Fatima

According to the surviving seer of Fatima, Sister Lucy, in 1957 said: “For three reasons the Blessed Virgin has given me to understand that we are at the end of time.”

On December 26, 1957, Father Agustín Fuentes, a priest of the diocese of Veracruz (Mexico) and vice postulator of the causes of beatification of St. Jacinta and St. Francis Marto, spoke extensively with Sister Lucy in the convent of Coimbra, Portugal . On his return to Mexico he gave a conference on this meeting, referring to the words of Sister Lucy.

Father Joaquín Maria Alonso [1] emphasized that  the report of the conference was published “with all the guarantees of authenticity and with the proper episcopal approval , including that of the Bishop of Fatima” [2].

Below, in full, as published on the Portuguese website  Apelos de Nossa Senhora , the words spoken by Sister Lucy to Fr. Agustín. At the time, the priest says that he had found the seer of Fatima “very sad, very pale and depressed.” This is what she revealed to him [3].

Dear Father, the Blessed Virgin is very saddened, no one to heed Your Message, neither the good nor the bad: the good ones, because they continue in their path of goodness, but without paying attention to this Message; the evil ones, because, not seeing that the punishment of God already hovers over them because of their sins, they also continue in their way of evil, ignoring this Message. But believe me, Father,  God will punish the world, and will punish you in a tremendous way. The punishment of Heaven is imminent.

Father, what is missing for 1960? And what will happen then? It will be a very sad thing for everyone, not a joyful thing, if the world does not pray and repent. I can not go into more details,  since it’s still a secret. According to the will of the Blessed Virgin, only the Holy Father and the Bishop of Fatima are allowed to know the Secret, but they decided not to know it in order not to be influenced. This is the third part of the Message of Our Lady, which will be kept secret until 1960.

Tell them, Father, that the Blessed Virgin repeatedly told us, both to my cousins Francisco and Jacinta, and to me, that several nations will disappear from the face of the earth. He said that  Russia would be the instrument of heaven’s punishment for the whole world , if we did not reach the conversion of this poor nation.

Father,  the devil is fighting a decisive battle against the Virgin Mary . And since he knows that he is the one who offends God the most and who, in less time, will win him a greater number of souls, he  tries to win for himself the souls consecrated to God, since in this way the devil also leaves the field of souls of the faithful forsaken and more easily seizes them.

What afflicts the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the fall of the souls of the Religious and the Priests. The devil knows that religious and priests who fall from their beautiful vocation draw many souls to hell. The devil wants to take possession of consecrated souls. It tries to corrupt them to numb the souls of the laity and thus lead them to final impenitence.

It uses all the tricks, even to the point of suggesting a delay in entering religious life. What results from this is the sterility of the interior life, and among the laity a coldness (lack of enthusiasm) as to renounce to the pleasures and to dedicate totally to God.

Father, let us not expect from Rome a call to penance from the Holy Father for the whole world; nor do we hope that such an appeal will come from the Bishops for each of the Dioceses; nor even of the Religious Congregations. No.  Our Lord has already used many of these means and no one has listened to them . So now … now  that each one of us begins his own spiritual reform : he has to save not only his soul but also all the souls that God has put in his way …

The devil does everything in his power to distract us and withdraw our love of prayer ; we will all be saved or we will all be condemned.

My Lord, the Blessed Virgin did not tell me that we were in the last days of the world, but I was given three reasons to understand:

The first because he told me that the devil is fighting a decisive battle against the Virgin Mary and  a decisive battle is a final battle, where we will know which side will win and which side will defeat . So now, either we are of God or we are of the devil: there is no middle ground.

The second, because he told me, both to my cousins and to me, that there were two of the last remedies God gave to the world: the Holy Rosary and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary; and if they are the last remedies, it means that they  are really the last, that there will be no others.

And the third because always in the plans of Divine Providence, when God is going to punish the world, first exhausts all other means; then, seeing that the world has paid no attention to any of them, only then (as we would say in our imperfect way of speaking) does His Blessed Mother present us, in a certain fear, the ultimate means of salvation. Because  if we despise and repel the latter, we will no longer obtain forgiveness from Heaven : because we commit a sin which is called in the Gospel “sin against the Holy Spirit” and consists in openly refusing, with all knowledge and will, salvation that is given to us in our hands; and also because  Our Lord is a very good Son, and does not allow us to offend and despise His Most Holy Mother, bearing witness to the history of several centuries of the Church which, with terrible examples, shows us how Our Lord always left in defense of the Honor of His Most Holy Mother.

There are two ways to save the world: prayer and sacrifice. Look, Father, the Blessed Virgin, in these last times in which we live, has given a new efficacy to the prayer of the Holy Rosary. In such a way that now no problem, however difficult it may be, is temporal or, above all, spiritual, which refers to the personal life of each one of us; or to the lives of our families, be it the families of the world, be it the Religious Communities; or to the life of peoples and nations. No problem, I repeat, however difficult it may be, that we can not resolve now  with the prayer of the Holy Rosary. With the Holy Rosary we will save ourselves, sanctify ourselves, comfort our Lord and obtain the salvation of many souls.

And then, devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Most Holy Mother, seeing in her the thirst for mercy, kindness and forgiveness, and the safe door to enter Heaven. Also tell them, Father, that  my cousins Francis and Jacinta sacrificed themselves because they saw the Blessed Virgin always very sad in all her appearances. She never smiled at us ; and this sadness and anguish that we noticed in the Blessed Virgin, because of the offenses against God and the punishments that threatened sinners, we felt them to the soul. And we did not even know what else to invent to find in our childish imagination means of prayer and sacrifice.

    1. Father JM Alonso, a Claretian priest, was appointed by the Bishop of Leiria-Fátima, D. João Venâncio (1954-1972), to be an official archivist of Fatima. He wrote a monumental work on the Apparitions of Fatima, entitled  Critical Texts and Studies on Fatima . This work, comprising 24 volumes containing 5793 documents, was completed in 1975, but its publication was prohibited by the successor bishop, D. Alberto Cosme do Amaral. In the 1990s, the first two volumes were published, but not fully.
    2. The meeting of Fr. Agustín Fuentes with Sister Lucy, and the conference on this meeting, was documented in depth by Frère Michel de la Sainte Trinite in vol. III of his work  Toute la Vérité sur Fatima. In June 1981, after having preached a retreat in Brittany, Father Superior Georges de Nantes entrusted Frère Michel with the task of studying in a scientific and exhaustive manner the Apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima, as well as her requests, and the relevance of Her Message for our times.
    3. CNP Team Note: When we published this text, we did it without knowing the long-standing controversy about the authenticity of this interview. The controversy can be understood in detail in the third volume of Frère Michel de la Sainte Trinité’s ” The Whole Truth About Fatima ” (John Collorafi, New York / Ontario: Immaculate Heart Publications, 1990). 549-554. Considering, however, that the text attributed to the seer of Fatima ” does not say anything that Sister Lucy did not say in her numerous writings that were published ” and that the message contained therein presents ” a very appropriate teaching to build the piety of Christians ” – Words of Fr. Joaquín M.ª Alonso -, we have to keep it well in this space.

‘Nobody Will Live Forever…When God Calls You, He Will Ask You About Your Life’ – Virgin Mary

Since 36 years, Mirjana, one of the six visionaries who, thanks to Our Lady, leaves us her precious messages to Medjugorje, asked of the Virgin how to be alert and to recognize the face of evil, Mirjana in an interview revealed what Our Lady told her:

Our Lady said in a message:

“Where I arrive, Satan arrives. Because he can not see holy Masses and prayers without trying to do something. But he has strength if we give it to him. If God reigns in our hearts, Jesus and Our Lady is already occupied”.

Our Lady is the one who has more power against Satan; remaining with her, entrusting herself to her intercession, can make the difference in every moment of our life, between remaining in the Lord’s graces and stopping in despair, hatred and resentment.

If someone thinks these are affirmations of circumstance, he must do nothing but experience them, with an open heart and full hope, to verify their veracity: he will not be disappointed!

“We think we live forever. Nobody will live forever. Every moment can be the one in which God calls us. Because life passes. It’s just a passage. One must earn one’s life with God. (…) Our Lady said in a message: “When God calls you, he will ask you about your life. What will you tell him? How were you? Only that is important”.

And even in this the Virgin helps us very much : she is the model to which we will have to inspire ourselves. His irreproachable behavior is for us the drive towards the search for purity, humility, to recognize oneself without any wisdom or ability, except by divine action.

Praying is the means to free oneself from the superfluous, from everything that obscures or hides the truth, from what makes us waste time in finding a dialogue with the Lord. And praying is not a way to satisfy oneself, but to rediscover the union with all the brothers , in a gigantic embrace that gathers those who yearn for the Creator.

“I wanted to ask you from the heart: please pray for us visionaries, to do all that God wants from us. It is very easy to make mistakes and we need you, your prayers.
We here in Medjugorje pray for pilgrims every day, so that you can understand why you are here and what God wants from you. Thus we are always united in prayer, as our Mother wants. Always as His children”.

The Third Apparition of the Angel.

Lucia is uncertain when the third apparition of the angel occurred, sometime in late September or in October 1916 is her recollection. Having gone to the Cabeco with their flocks, and being more attentive to the words of the Angel, they immediately knelt down to pray the prayer taught them by the angel: My God, I believe, I adore etc…

“After we had repeated this prayer [I don’t know how many times], we saw shining over us a strange light. We lifted our heads to see what was happening. We saw the Angel with a chalice in his left hand and a Host suspended above it, from which some drops of the Precious Blood fell.
