Access to clean and safe drinking water is one of the most urgent needs for nearly 1/3 of the world’s population. Every single day, 1.8 billion people use a source of drinking water contaminated with feaces and other pollutants, putting them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio.

Our Lord told a parable in the Gospel of Luke about the Rich Man and the Beggar Lazarus. The rich man lived his life in luxury, wearing fine purple linens and eating abundantly, while at his gate there was a poor man who ate scraps while dogs licked his sores. When both men died, the angels carried the poor Lazarus to the side of the Patriarch Abraham where he was finally in sweet comfort. The rich man, however, was sent to fiery torment where he pleaded “Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire!”

But Abraham replied, “Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.”

The rich man who ignored the thirsty beggar now called out for just a drop of cooling water, but could not receive it because he did not in his life do the same for the poor.

Right now, in this world, there are nearly two billion people calling out to YOU for just a drop of clean, cooling water… how will you respond?

In developed countries, far removed from this devastating scenario, it can be hard to imagine and put into perspective how dire this situation is. We just marked World Water Day during this Lent, why not skip the Latte and give the gift of water. And you can do that with MISSIO, a new and innovative Catholic crowd-funding platform powered by The Pontifical Mission Societies that allows you to donate directly to those in the most need.

MISSIO allows you to search through vital charity projects like these for water, donate directly to them, and share them on social media so others can support the projects also.

Launched by Pope Francis himself, the MISSIO platform offers a direct connection to change-makers who work on the “front lines” making a difference for the poor and marginalized through direct, daily service.

Some example of the types of projects you can support on MISSIO are a number of projects that will provide access to clean and safe drinking water in the poorest of nations.

There are opportunities to provide clean drinking water to build a water purification system in Vietnam, drill water wells in Tanzania, help a priest in Kenya purchase water tanks for his parish, or help a priest construct a solar powered water pump in Burkina Faso. With MISSIO you can give directly to the people running projects to bring clean water to those in urgent need!

MISSIO is powered by The Pontifical Mission Societies, the Catholic Church’s official support organization for overseas missions since 1822, providing for a global network of people who are making a difference for communities in need around the globe.

Check out MISSIO today and start giving!
